musée de cluny

Today for my French History class, we went to Musée de Cluny - a museum of medieval life in France.

Here is the museum from the outside!

This post will be mainly pictures with a little information here and there about the different exhibits.
Musée de Cluny is a good choice if you're in city and in the mood to visit a museum, but don't want to spend all afternoon or even all morning there. The museum itself is relatively small, but holds a lot of interesting pieces and the architecture and set-up of the building itself is just as fascinating!

The first room we went into was completely full of stained glass windows! A big point of our entire visit was seeing how art was used to educate people who could not read. In these pieces you see both elements of religion and of explanation of the monarchy in France at the time.

I captioned this one: "Ya done good kid."

See that head in the bottom right? That was originally in Notre-Dame de Paris, BUT during the French Revolution, all of the statues were beheaded. One man, however, who was loyal to the monarchy somehow got all of the heads back to his basement and hid them there. They were only discovered a few years ago (in relation to when they were originally taken). Who knows what else is lying under Paris?

A close-up of the detail on these columns!

Now the next few medieval sculptures have a lot of sass...

All I could think of while looking at this chalice was "the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!" - The Court Jester, another great film you should watch!

The ceiling and upper altar of this chapel! Look at the detail on the ceiling!

We wondered if people actually used to look like the lady on the left here - perfectly sculpted eyebrows and all. And the nun on the right is obviously praying that the current styles of the times will soon change as she is DONE with that hat.

And to finish this post, here is the sassiest medieval sculpture of them all.
(He's actually a depiction of a Saint!)

I hope you enjoyed this peek into the Musée de Cluny!
Tomorrow we head to a brief trip to the Louvre, but in the meantime, I'm just trying to escape this Parisian heat!
